The Pilgrimage Tradition of the Devotion to the Virgin Mary in Hungary

The Virgin Mary is specially regarded by the Christian people of the Carpathian Basin since Stephen King offered the country to her.

Many saint wells, churches and settlements are bearing her name. The pilgrimage targets of the Christian culture are mainly memorials, graves, sources with miracle tradition or objects (e.g. paintings, sculptures).

Among these places the pilgrimages to the shrines of Virgin Mary are the most significant. The goal of a pilgrimage is always visiting a place considered saint or a shrine.
According to the Catholic faith the pilgrimage is to release the punishment for the sin and it always links to a pilgrimage site.
Pilgrimage means visiting pilgrimage sites to earn indulgence. There are approximately 1 million visitors of the pilgrimage sites per year.
