Community model for the preservation of local cultural heritage in the framework of the Muharay Elemér Folk Art Association
The model of local cultural heritage safeguarding developed within the Elemér Muharay Folk Art Association aims to coordinate the activities of small, mainly rural communities in the preservation and transmission of their heritage.
The communities that are members of the Association, which was established in 1990, come from regions of Hungary rich in folk art and their activities involve 16 counties. In these communities, decades of attention by folk dance and folk music researchers, professional and touristic interest in folk art have actively contributed to the strengthening of cultural awareness, the appreciation of traditional culture and the creation of initiatives to preserve heritage. The aim of the programme is to organise the voluntary heritage safeguarding activities of local communities into an open cultural network, without harming the interests of the member organisations. The programme is carried out both within local communities and in cooperation with other communities through events organised within the framework of the Association to achieve common goals.
