JUBILEE YEAR OF LIVING HERITAGE

JUBILEE YEAR OF LIVING HERITAGE

2023. február 14. | UNESCO, countless, folk, art, traditional, festivals, workshops

Forty-eight intangible cultural heritage elements, countless folk art and traditional festivals, concerts, dance halls, demonstrations, and workshops await visitors throughout the year. In 2023, UNESCO's Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is celebrate its 20th anniversary.

In 2003, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) adopted the international Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which aims to identify and safeguard elements of the intangible cultural heritage. Human communities carry a diversity of living heritage, including practices, representations, expressions, pieces of knowledge, and skills that have given and continue to give meaning to our daily lives. Living and passing on this heritage contributes to the continued vitality, strength, and well-being of communities. Hungary ratified the Convention in 2006, and the professional coordination of its implementation is carried out by the Directorate of Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Hungarian Open Air Museum in Szentendre.

Coordinated by the Directorate, the year-long celebrations bring together artisanal, gastronomic, dramatic, and performing traditions and urban customs such as Lipizzan horse breeding, folk art in Kalocsa, fishing in the Danube region or even the Hungarian circus art.
During the anniversary year, a number of informing and media programs are implemented to make intangible cultural heritage widely known.

On 18 February, the Skanzen film series on Intangible Cultural Heritage was launched on public media. The ethnographic expert and managing editor of the series is Eszter Csonka-Takács Ph.D., head of the Directorate of Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the director of the films is László Kovács (Konkam BT.) The episodes of the films not only bring folk traditions, customs, or techniques closer to the audience but also give voice to the small communities that safeguard and sustain them. Viewers can get to know communities that carry on their customs in a way that even young people who have left the city or gone abroad can be invited back home for an occasion, to re-engage in the life of the community.

The series of TIT Open University lectures on the elements of the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage list began on 23 February at the Kossuth Club with a presentation of one of our carnival traditions, the 'The Remélés',a Masked Carnival Custom is Novaj.

In addition, a radio series, a creative competition for children, and museum heritage tours in the Skanzen accompany the program of the jubilee year.
